Chapter Thirteen

There was a quote somewhere about the best-laid plans of mice and men and how they sometimes get royally screwed up—but Sean wasn’t interested in quotes. He was interested in Jason. And Jason might have decided to come home, but he wasn’t having any part of a getaway to Vail and a couple of days of father-son talks.

And the devil of it was that Sean really couldn’t blame the kid. He was having a ball working at R & F, and he didn’t want to miss a single day.

“But we’ll talk, Dad,” Jason had promised halfheartedly as he headed up the stairs to look through the pile of papers he’d brought home from the office. “Honest. You go have a great time in Vail. I’ll be fine here. Really. It’s much better here, without the hour commute from Mom’s house.”

Which, Sean realized as he walked into the living room and sat down in his favorite chair, left him with little to do for the next two weeks except sit here, staring at four walls, or go back to work.

And he wasn’t going to go back to work.

Not when he hadn’t had a vacation in five years. Not when he wanted, needed, to be with his son. And not when Cassandra’s school year was over and the woman had as much free time as he did.

Sean looked up as Jason came back down the stairs, a rock T-shirt replacing the white dress shirt he’d had on earlier, his long legs encased in a more decrepit pair of jeans. He sure was a handsome kid, even if he didn’t exactly resemble any parental description of “clean-cut.” Not in that outfit!

“Where are you going, son?” Sean called out as casually as possible as he rose from his chair and slowly walked toward the foyer.

“Out,” Jason replied guardedly, his eyes on the tile floor, his posture going stiff, as if he was preparing himself for the inevitable battle such a response usually incited. They might have made it through Jason’s return to the house and the discussion of a vacation in Vail without too much hassle, but Jason obviously believed that the explosion he’d expected earlier was now about to arrive.

“All right,” Sean said, gesturing toward the living room. “But could we talk first? I have something I want to say to you, if you don’t mind.”

“Um, look, Dad, if you’re going to try getting me to go to Vail again, I thought I already told you—I’m not going anywhere. I mean, I’m having fun for the first time in so long, doing something really important, and now you’re trying to screw it all up with this business about father-and-son bonding, or whatever you were carrying on about. I mean, for crying out loud, Dad, can’t I ever—”

“Jason!” Sean said, just a little too loudly, then held out his hands as he shook his head, as if physically pushing away yet another explosive argument. “Nope. No way, bucko, no how. Jason, I’m not going to let it be that easy for you.
